Ambiance

hello,

the new issue/episode/incarnation of 1in20 is up on
the abc dig site and it's all about the music that i am
probably actually the most into at the moment - minimalist
classical and ambient "intelligent dance music"

1 Hour of Music in 20 Minutes - Ambiance

it has music by philip glass, aphex twin, steve reich,
michael nyman, orbital, william orbit, evelyn glennie, john
adams, susumu yokota... the list goes on (not much more, but
it does go on)

i've been listening to a lot of modern classical lately and
have long held the opinion that if you played some of the
more transcendent ambient techno and trip hop in a concert
setting, it would be as musically valuable as anything
categorised as 'modern classical' and so i set about the
task of placing some of my favourite pieces side by side,
one after the other, in a pleasant (and interesting,
hopefully!) flow of lovely music

Hi H,

I burned this one to cd to listen to in loungey comfort and im sure it make my glass of wine taste so much better.

Love all this stuff as you know, Violin Phase is one of my favourite Reich pieces and i think that Eno/Budd compilation was one of the first ambient cd's i ever purchased.

Great to be reminded about William Orbit who i forgot was that good.

Would love to see Aphex's selected Ambient Works (esp volume 1) performed by the Melbourne Symphony! Didnt someone do that a couple of years back?? Or perhaps im thinking of Kraftwerk. Maybe Fourtet would be interested. You should get onto organising that one girl!

Love Hxx

hey hermione,

congratulations on another great thought provoking podcast darling.

As usual you have caused me to question your choice of tracks (I wouldn't have chosen that aphex track) while at the same time introducing me to new and exciting stuff. How good is that William Orbit track?
Positively dreamy, and it's completely new to me, I've got to have it now.

NIce work petal, and thanks again for a lovely time over the weekend.

Ciao.

Hey Hermoine,

That was a beautiful set. I will definately track down some Evelyn Glennie after that little insight.
Not sure if you know these artists or not, but I rate these albums in this instance, very highly;

Growing - the sky's run into the sea
Jim O'Rourke - Terminal Pharmacy
Oval - 94 diskont, or ovalprocess
Pan American - quiet city, for waiting for chasing, or the river made no sound
Stars Of The Lid - avec laudenum, music for nitrous oxide, or the tired sounds of stars of the lid

Thanks, I look forward to the next installment

Shaun

hi timofi - i've actually recently heard some coda and they're good. Ingram Marshall I don't know and I'll check out that ECM label too. Thanks!

hi heide-san - i know what you mean about william orbit. you've got to hear his beethoven triple concerto. i love that. i only didn't put that in the program because the cd was at my mum's house! :)

greta! - i knew that wasn't the aphex one you'd have gone for, and you'd know all the pretty ones! but goon gumpas has been a real favourite with me since i first heard that richard d. james album, so i put it in! that orbital track is one of the finest pieces of music ever, even with it's faults (i always think the drop out of the piano into the beats is a little sudden :)

beth - hello, thanks for your comment :) i'm really glad you enjoyed the programme. my harold budd on vinyl is one of my prize possessions! i think i did a double take when i found the album i have. i had only just heard of harold budd and felt mesmerised to be holding the actual record... Orbit's a funny one. he's kind of got his fingers in so many pies, but when he breaks out the real delicate beauty, he's up there with my favourites of this style. simon jeffes and susumu yokota have lots more lovely music too

shaun - nice list! i love oval. i'm thinking of doing a glitch special if i can find enough material to fill it. jim o'rourke i only have bits and pieces, but his name keeps cropping up. will have to look into him, and you mention stars of the lid too. i need to know more about them. thanks heaps for your comment and stay tuned, more to come!

oh, and before I forget. i have been agonising over one thing since 'ambience' went live. simon jeffes isn't one of the composers of the penguin cafe orchestra. he is The composer. he invented the term penguin cafe to describe some magical internal space. he is someone i would have loved to see live... bless him for writing the beautiful music he did!
