the final in this series of 1 hour of music in 20 minutes bespoke is up on abc dig now.

bespoke is a tribute to some of my favourite songs that are favourites because of their lyrics. i noticed a few trends in my own playlists when it comes to adding spoken/wordy songs. they're funny, odd, poetic, beautiful, silly, insightful and delightful.

Soundtracks

It is my great pleasure to direct this blog's notice to the new 1 Hour of Music in 20 Minutes: Soundtracks which has gone up on abc dig

This one has been brewing for a while, and already it seems I might have to produce a sequel because there is just so much great music that I’ve got from films and this podcast is only about fifteen songs long.

I made myself a mix cd of all these songs while this was being prepared and it struck me repeatedly just how much of this playlist is real honest-to-god favourites. Like Billie Holiday! This is literally where I first heard Pennies From Heaven.

One thing has been bothering me though, I assumed that because the song Via Con Me was used in French Kiss that Paolo Conte was French but then, listening more closely to the song’s lyrics it gradually dawned on me… oh dear, I think this bloke is Italian, and he in fact is, so – my apologies for that error. The way it’s used in the film makes it sound so very French!

Anyway, I reckon it’s a pretty glorious playlist, (especially the Deb Talan song – what a jewel that is!) and I hope you like it!

p.s. there is a lovely film which i saw the other day which has excellent original music written especially for it by dishy young Norwegian singer/songwriter Sondra Lerche - the film is Dan In Real Life directed by my dear Peter Hedges (Pieces of April, What's Eating Gilbert Grape? - novel and screenplay). It's lovely music and a lovely film :)

Well, it did take me an unusually long time, but the new 1 Hour of Music in 20 Minutes - Art is up now on Dig.

I went to see the Guggenheim exhibition at the National Gallery of Victoria recently and read a great quote by German artist Thomas Demand in the catalogue. He said "things enter reality through photography... Tourists don't know they've seen the sights until they can match their experience to the picture postcard"

I wondered if music can work the same, like we know it's time for the slow dance, time to be romantic when the DJ plays Careless Whisper at the school social. Do we use music to create, define, and even supplant our memories? Thinking of the roles performed by music chosen for weddings, funerals, dinner parties, children's birthdays. I imagine it's unlikely someone will choose to walk down the aisle to Peaches' I Don't Give a Fuck (though, I would find that pretty funny)

Anyway, that's not really what the program ended up being, but it went through lots of research and writing before I was ready to put it out there. I bought lots of new records and had to really give them proper 'listens' before I worked out what I was really 'saying' :)

What 1in20 - Art is, in the end, I hope, is an enquiry into the role of art in inspiring musicians, the ways art and art institutions help to form musical groups, what "art rock" is and what it sounds like, what a musician who is really an artist seems to be doing with their music and whether or not this complex, ambitious music is palatable to people.

Have a listen... i hope you like it. Hopefully it won't be nearly so long between this one and the next one!

Please excuse the week-lateness of this blog about the new programme - 1 Hour of Music in 20 Minutes - Mix Me a Gift - I got bronchitis and haven't moved for most of the last week after I finished it.

But I do love music and I'm also a bit of nut about the hows and such of recording it, copying it and mixing it. It's amazing to think how much music I've learned to love from having been given it by friends, family, even strangers.

The unifying theme here is mixes I've been given. CDs and tapes.

Love and Hearbreak: Heartbreak

It's up now, the second part of the project that became Love and Heartbreak.
1 Hour of Music in 20 Minutes- Love and Heartbreak Part Two: Heartbreak

Heartbreaking songs are such favourites of mine that I had no trouble finding a selection, but I didn't think it was enough to just play a series of sad songs. I wanted to examine why heartbreak happens and how it is represented in songs. One line that I ended up cutting from the programme said that maybe heartbreak was the product of an insufficient aqcuaintance with ourselves. That heartbreak can only result from some form of miscommunication, deliberate or incidental... I cut it because it sounded too preachy :)

I now have a playlist in my iTunes called non-love heartbreakers, to file away the songs that I thought might work but turned out weren't really about relationships.

I'll load up the entire list of track I used soon, but in the meantime, please enjoy the programme.

I'm working on the next few 1in20s, but **also** - if you happen to be in Melbourne this Friday July 6th, come and hear me DJ live at Loop Bar (23 Meyers Place, Melbourne) from 10pm. Drive

driving is one of my favourite things to do. I love being on my own in the car listening to a nice selection of music and enjoying the flow of movement. I don’t much like traffic, but I love outsmarting it, like knowing where to turn to miss a congested intersection or which roads don’t get held up by the trams or buses.

I have been on lots of long drives, which I guess being an Australian driver, is pretty much par for the course. when I drive between capital cities I know I’ll need a good ten hours worth of music, and that that music is going to have quite a job to keep me awake, amused, tuned in and happy.

my car music cds that I make have become some of my best mixes. I like to throw them together, rather than painstakingly assemble them. I try out songs to see if I’ll like them, and I’ll put old favourites on them as well.

this 1 Hour of Music in 20 Minutes is dedicated to driving, and the listening space that is the automobile…

I would actually love to know what people think about music to walk or ride to… is that different?

Ladies

Okay new one has been a bit of a long time coming, suffered several playlist changes and about four different scripts, but 1 Hour of Music in 20 Minutes - Ladies is now up and downloadable from abc.net.au/dig

My thanks to G for his patience while I rejigged it at the eleventh hour :)

Ladies was always a programme I wanted to make, but when I actually sat down to put it together, I had trouble deciding what exactly I wanted to communicate.

My favourite female singers are like friends to me. What else would you call someone who you spend vast amounts of time with, think of when you're apart, remember and consult for their wisdom and experience and turn to for amusement, comfort and companionship?

My favourite ladies are people I know - like Bridget Martin, who I did the sound for when she came to Melbourne and later stayed at my house, and people I feel like I know - like Chan Marshall, or people I think I'd probably like to know - like Rachel Cooper, Edith Frost, Sarah 'El Perro Del Mar' Assbring, Julie Doiron and Mo Tucker.

I did do a women's show on community radio, for about a year. It was a challenge for me becase all my favorites up to that point were male. I found new favourites in legends like Odetta and Billie Holiday and played Edie Brickell's What I am quite a bit... I didn't have a copy of Odetta or Edie, otherwise they'd be in this one, and Billie's brilliant Pennies From Heaven got cut at the last minute for time reasons.

But here it is! New programme, and I hope you enjoy it.

It's, as ever, really about the music, and for a playlist, I reckon I did well :)

Thanks to Nigel for emailing me Rachel Cooper's Shady Girl (which I wish I'd just bought off her when I saw her at the Crown and Sceptre that time...), and whoever it was at Three D who gave me the chance to present the women's show all those years ago now... I think you opened my ears to my own gender!

Caution - I have been reading Georgette Heyer books and my language may be even more flowery than usual :)

This episode of 1in20 is a salute to and a celebration of as much of my favourite indicental film music as I could fit into the programme. As always, I had to cut a few bits out to make it fit, so there is now no Audrey's Dance, from Twin Peaks, no Calexico, no Yo La Tengo...

Summer

Hello,

The new 1 Hour of Music in 20 Minutes - Summer is up now on the abc dig site, and it's about what makes good summer music. What tends to re-emerge when it gets warm and why?

I reckon you can probably tell a lot about a person by their summer music selection, but I studied communications and reckon you can tell a lot about a person from how they order their coffee... but still, would there be so much indie pop and shoegaze if I hadn't spent my first late teenage summers hanging out with Ride and Stone Roses fans?

The program has undergone a bit of an evolution over the past month and a bit I've been working on it, but it was really just about sharing some of the music that seems to get brought out along with my summer dresses and open shoes :)

I love pop and so that's pretty clearly reflected, and in the tunes of a couple of real new favourite bands for me - The Brother Kite, Of Montreal, and Beirut.

Growing as well have just shot to a lofty spot on my list of amazing bands, and a very big smile goes out to Kevin who wrote back to my email the same day I wrote to him to say how much I had enjoyed hearing his music on the weekend that had just passed. Awesome to be responded to!

I have to thank the people who played me those new favourite bands, worksafe_hiponion for The Brother Kite and Of Montreal (will look up Apples in Stereo next!), Hoops for Growing and the Remote Control Records myspace for Beirut. Oh, and I'm sure she's noticed it, but thanks also to Gretska for the Stereolab :)

Hello!

I just wanted to say a quick thank you for your comments. I'm working away on the next three episodes of 1 Hour of Music in 20 Minutes. I've also just finished a slightly different kind of program for abc dig which is about the music from the Meredith Music Festival.

Meredith is a Festival with a reputation for bringing the finest of International and Australian acts to play at this unique and really wonderful-sounding event, held in a small rural town in Victoria, Australia.

The podcast will go live next week. But I just wanted to let you know that I do check this blog and am admonishing myself for not posting more. 2007 is going to be my year of being really diligent! :)

hello,

the new issue/episode/incarnation of 1in20 is up on
the abc dig site and it's all about the music that i am
probably actually the most into at the moment - minimalist
classical and ambient "intelligent dance music"

it has music by philip glass, aphex twin, steve reich,
michael nyman, orbital, william orbit, evelyn glennie, john
adams, susumu yokota... the list goes on (not much more, but
it does go on)

i've been listening to a lot of modern classical lately and
have long held the opinion that if you played some of the
more transcendent ambient techno and trip hop in a concert
setting, it would be as musically valuable as anything
categorised as 'modern classical' and so i set about the
task of placing some of my favourite pieces side by side,
one after the other, in a pleasant (and interesting,
hopefully!) flow of lovely music

1 hour of music in 20 minutes - believer

for ages i've described myself as a 'believer' and not really worried too much that I can't say for absolute sure what it is that i believe in. i take great pleasure and comfort in the act of believing...
i'm sure that could sound very weird.

i went to christian schools and grew up knowing all the stories about noah and moses and jesus. i had favourite stories (jesus turning the money-counting tables over and curing the 10 lepers).

i would never profess to know what the answers are to any part of the great religious debate. i have my theories, but i'm no theologian, but anyway, i have accrued a variety of interesting songs in my library of music that i have linked together here under the theme of 'believer'.

the play list is going to be put up here very soon, but in the meantime, i've built this blog site so that we have a place to talk about the programmes, should you wish to.

people have said to me that they've started to think about what they would have put in a show with whatever theme it was, and instead of just telling me and it stopping there, i thought, well, actually greta thought :) that a blog might be good, so...

if you have a response, a comment, an idea, a theory, a playlist of your own or any kind of feedback, i'd love to hear it

my friend greta suggested I start a blog for the programmes. Each new 1in20 seems to inspire my dearest friends to tell me what they would have put in their version of the programme!

I do spend a lot of time putting the playlists together and often will think "oh, blast, I could have included...", but I don't mind that it has that element of being organic and incomplete. I try to do my best, but if you have an opinion or would like to tell people what you thought of the programmes, please be my guest and do it here.
